Phillip Schofield delivered some huge news to viewers at home and the cast and crew of Doctors as the BBC series caused a huge upset at Saturday's British Soap Awards.
It would be fair to say that the afternoon soap has also been somewhat in the shadow of the BBC's other show EastEnders, as well as other programmes like Coronation Street, Emmerdale and Hollyoaks. However, it has done alright at the Soap Awards over the years, making history by tying with EastEnders for Best Scene in 2018. And there was a big turn up for the books when Doctors took home one the big awards of the night this year - Best Single Episode.
The show made the shortlist for its Three Consultations and a Funeral episode, starring former EastEnders star Lucy Benjamin. It faced stiff competition from the likes of Coronation Street's Flashback, which revisited the fatal attack on Seb; EastEnders trip to Southend for Jean's wedding and the hard-hitting Emmerdale episode where much loved Marlon suffered a stroke.

Prior to the award being handed out, British Soap Awards host Phillip said the panel had found it incredibly difficult to pick one and, when the result was revealed to have gone in Doctors' favour, the cast and crew from the soap looked in a state of shock. And, once acceptance speeches had been done, Phillip had some even better news for them.
Standing at the winners' podium, the This Morning host Phillip said: "Well I can tell you that the panel were absolutely blown away by that winning episode and they agreed that had it been on at 9pm as a Stand-alone special it could have even won a BAFTA."
