Phillip Schofield forced to apologise as This Morning guest swears over giant potato

Phillip Schofiled was quick to apologise to viewers on This Morning on Tuesday, as a guest swore without warning.

Colin returned to the ITV show months after his first appearance, when he claimed to be a contender for the grower of the world's biggest potato.

But Colin was stunned to find out it wasn't a potato, after a DNA test - and it was in fact something else.

He was told the spud was in fact a tuber that grew underground on a gourd, which is a large fruit.

As Colin shared is shock over the news, he was more concerned at how the item had made it into his garden in the first place as "he'd never grown a gourd".

It's then that he explained he wasn't too disappointed as these things happen, before an analogy saw him drop the s-bomb.

He suddenly said: "But hey, it was a bit of a deflation to find out he wasn't a potato.

"As you walk along through life these s***ty sandwiches... somebody chucks one in your lunchbox."

Phillip and co-host Josie Gibson, who was replacing Holly Willoughby on the show, immediately gasped and apologised, but were clearly amused by the moment.

Phil said to the camera: "Oh! Sorry, sorry, sorry," as Josie added: "Sorry about that."

Colin didn't seem bothered by his blunder, while another guest was quick to mock the moment as she discussed how to grow big spuds.

She mentioned the process of chitting, before spelling it out letter by letter to make it clear she was not swearing like Colin.

Phil then joked: "Am I going to have to apologise again?"

Viewers tuning in at home loved the moment, and wanted to see more of Colin on the programme.

One fan tweeted: "S***ty sandwiches I LOVE HIM."

Another viewer said: "We need more of Colin, he’s brilliant. I mean come on ‘s***ty sandwiches’, and his total disgust that Phil keeps calling it a gourd instead of a tuber."

Meanwhile a third unimpressed viewer wrote: "The world is in chaos and they have to apologise because someone says 's***ty'."

This Morning airs weekdays at 10am on ITV.
