Phillip and Holly's 'awkward' kiss goodbye betrayed his 'keenness' to rekindle friendship

Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield were pictured looking much perkier as they headed to the This Morning studio today.

Although separate, both Holly, 42, and 61-year-old Phil both had smiles on their faces as they prepared to head to the ITV show's studio today.

The brave faces from the pair was a big contrast to sightings of the pair in recent days, as Phillip and Holly were snapped looking downcast and glum on Monday and Tuesday.

This Morning hosts Holly and Phil have been rumoured to have been embroiled in a feud, with it being claimed the pair's friendship has 'cooled' in recent months and Holly 'cutting ties' from Phil.

Phillip, who has hosted the daytime programme since 2002, released a statement claiming things "haven't been easy" for the pair after Phil's brothers sexual abuse trial and backlash over Queuegate, which was reported to have worsened things as Holly was left "deeply upset".

Despite the pair refusing to address the reported drama while hosting the show, their off-screen expressions appeared to show cracks in their friendship.

And as fans noticed the apparent awkwardness between the pair, speculation began to boil that Phillip could be facing the axe after more than 20 years on the programme.

But, the pair appeared to make an attempt to shun feud rumours as they shared a friendly hug and kiss on the cheek as holly departed the show earlier today.

Does the recent more upbeat snaps and display of friendly affection mark a turning point in Holly and Phil's relationship or are the pair faking it until they make it? Body language expert Judi James gives her take...

Holly built up to this farewell with a couple of shyness or anxiety gestures, stroking the side of her hair and then giggling with her hand in front of her mouth.

The kiss was instigated by her in an announcement ritual as she held both hands out but Phil reciprocated and actually looked keener with the hug than she did.

It was a rather awkward-looking cheek kiss on both cheeks as she took her farewell. There was enough arm-holding to make it more affectionate than an average distancing cheek kiss, although there was a hint of the classic ‘mwah mwah’ sound too.

The smiles today as the pair made their way into the studio might not have looked authentically upbeat and carefree but both Holly and Phil did make the decision to wear or perform them in what looks like a mutual or like-minded decision.

Previously Phil’s ‘en-route’ body language had looked grim-faced rather than resilient. Initially his flat, straight mouth shape and downcast eyes had implied low energy and spirit and when he did look up his eye expression on the 15th looked slightly stricken.

On the Tuesday his torso seemed to suggest higher energy, with a splayed chest and his sleeves pushed back, despite the way that his head was still lowered. His downturned mouth had heavy grooves and lines at the sides and at one point his lips were clamped

Today his smile was actually prompted, which always makes a congruent smile easier to produce. He seemed to be smiling and chatting to his driver but even that suggested raised spirits as the gesture would not have been a given if he were feeling genuinely low. The smile wrinkled his eyes, making it look authentic, although it was also slightly contradictory with the very corners of his mouth curling down, hinting at mixed emotions.

Holly was looking quite high-energy, leaning forward into her leg stride as though keen to get to work. Her chin was up and her partial mouth smile could have been bravado but her body energy suggested it was quite genuine.
