Philippine Vice President Sara Duterte has announced that her legal team is gearing up for a legal battle in her upcoming impeachment trial. The Vice President, however, did not confirm whether resignation was on the table as a preemptive measure against a potential conviction that could bar her from running for president in the future.

Duterte's impeachment by the House of Representatives was based on various criminal charges, including an alleged plot to assassinate President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., her former running mate in the 2022 elections. Duterte vehemently denied these accusations, emphasizing the strained relationship between her and Marcos.

During a recent news conference, Duterte highlighted the economic challenges faced by Filipinos, citing the significant rise in living costs that have adversely impacted the population. She urged her supporters to voice their opinions on social media rather than resorting to street protests to avoid disruptions.

If convicted, Duterte could face a ban on holding public office, posing a significant setback to one of the country's prominent political families known for its alignment towards China.

The impeachment charges against Duterte included threats against Marcos, financial irregularities, and her alleged failure to confront Chinese aggression in the South China Sea. The Senate is scheduled to review the case when it reconvenes in June.

While Duterte's father, former President Rodrigo Duterte, fostered close relationships with Chinese and Russian leaders during his tenure, the current impeachment proceedings hold strategic importance for both the United States and China. The outcome could impact the geopolitical landscape in the region.

Despite facing uncertainties regarding her political future, Duterte expressed openness to a potential presidential bid in 2028, acknowledging the need to evaluate her chances. Although her popularity has seen a decline in recent independent surveys, she remains a prominent figure in the presidential race.

The Vice President emphasized the need for a thorough assessment before making any definitive decisions, underscoring the complexity of the political landscape.
