Financier and philanthropist Sir Evelyn de Rothschild has died aged 91, according to a family statement.

The businessman, born in London in 1931 and a scion of the Rothschild financial dynasty, is understood to have suffered a stroke two years ago and caught Covid earlier this year, but his family said he died “peacefully at home”.

Sir Evelyn, who is said to have advised the Queen on financial matters, served as chief executive and chairman of NM Rothschild and Sons Ltd between 1976 and 2003, and was chairman of The Economist from 1972 to 1989. In 1989 he was knighted by the Queen for services to banking and finance.

Sir Evelyn is survived by his wife, Lynn, and three children, Jessica, Anthony, and David, as well as two stepsons, Benjamin Forester Stein and John Forester Stein.

His family investment office, E L Rothschild, was set up in 2003. Under his watch, the family fortune is said to have grown from £40 million to £4.6 billion.

His philanthropic ventures included chairing the Eranda Rothschild foundation, which donated £73 million to medical research, education and the arts. In 2002 he also founded Elephant Family, a conservation charity. He also funded rural development schemes in India and served on the boards of bodies from the London School of Economics to Rada, Shakespeare’s Globe and St Mary’s Hospital Medical School in Paddington.
