Phil Mickelson to play in inaugural LIV Golf series after controversial comments over PGA Tour

Phil Mickelson has been confirmed for the inaugural LIV Golf tournament due to begin later this week.

There had been some surprise when the American was not included in the initial list of players taking part in the Invitational Series at the Centurion Club north-west of London.

Mickelson had angered much of his country’s golfing elite by criticising the PGA Tour earlier this year, for which he apologised and vowed to take a step back from the game.

But, on Monday, the Saudi-backed series confirmed the 51-year-old’s inclusion in the first-ever LIV Golf event alongside the likes of Dustin Johnson and Ian Poulter.

Greg Norman, CEO and Commissioner of LIV Golf said: “Phil Mickelson is unequivocally one of the greatest golfers of this generation.

“His contributions to the sport and connection to fans around the globe cannot be overstated and we are grateful to have him. He strengthens an exciting field for London where we’re proud to launch a new era for golf.

“Our International Series qualifiers have earned an incredible opportunity to compete in LIV Golf’s new format, and I’m eager to watch all of them tee it up next week. This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for many of them, and that has been a driving force behind our mission at LIV – creating player pathways and new opportunities to play the game we all love.”
