Phil Jones picked for just second time this season as Manchester United team confirmed

Manchester United boss Ralf Rangnick has handed a shock start to Phil Jones as his side prepare to take on Liverpool at Anfield.

It is only the centre-back’s second league appearance of the season, having last started in a defeat to Wolves in January. His only other game this term came as a substitute in United ’s FA Cup exit to Middlesborough, a month later.

The 30-year-old is one of four changes from United’s recent win over Norwich, with Rangnick having opted for a surprise five-at-the -back formation. Jones is partnered alongside Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof at centre-back, while Diogo Dalot is at wingback with Aaron Wan-Bissaka replacing Alex Telles.

The experienced Nemanja Matic also comes in for Jesse Lingard in midfield, alongside Paul Pogba. Adding a more defensive edge to United’s line-up, Liverpool ’s bitter rivals look keen to avoid a repeat of the 5-0 defeat the Red Devils suffered against Jurgen Klopp’s side in October.

Having also confirmed that Cristiano Ronaldo would miss the game at Anfield due to a recent family bereavement, Marcus Rashford takes his place in the front line. The England international will be supported by Anthony Elanga and Bruno Fernandes, with Jadon Sancho dropping to the bench.
