Phil Foden says Manchester United's Marcus Rashford is 'top three in the world' after England heroics

Phil Foden believes Marcus Rashford is in the top three players in the world for the way he strikes the ball, praising his England teammate after the pair led the Three Lions to a memorable victory over Wales.

Both Foden and Rashford were recalled by Gareth Southgate for England's final World Cup group game against neighbours Wales, and the Mancunian duo combined to see England safely through to the last-16 and knock Wales out.

After a quiet first half, Foden won a free kick that was expertly put away by Rashford, before the Manchester City man scored himself less than two minutes later to seal the game - before Manchester United's Rashford added a third following a nice assist from City midfielder Kalvin Phillips.

But it was that first goal - Rashford's free kick won from Foden's driving run - that delighted manager Gareth Southgate, as well as Foden.

The City forward was delighted after the game, and was full of praise for Rashford - hailing him as one of the best set-piece takers in world football.

Speaking to ITV Sport, Foden said: "In the first half I didn't really show my attacking threat. In the second half, Gareth managed to swap me and Marcus around so the second I got the ball I thought I was just going to drive with it. Luckily I managed to win the free kick and Marcus did the rest.

"This guy, for sure, is top three in the world the way he strikes the ball. If he continues to hit the target he's going to score a lot of goals."

Rashford is now level with Cody Gakpo, Kylian Mbappe and Enner Valencia as the joint-top scorer at the World Cup so far, and Foden predicted more goals will follow for the United striker.

"Great talent, he's unbelievable isn't he," Foden said. "You can see today how crucial he's going to be in the next stages. We're going to need him for sure."

Southgate also said of Rashford: “It's great for him. He's trained really well and has been impressive since he came back in with us. He could have had a hat-trick. The free kick, that's what he's capable of - it's an incredible strike.”
