Phil Foden could be about to help Liverpool star reach the next level

Liverpool youngster Harvey Elliott should look at Manchester City's Phil Foden as inspiration according to former Rangers forward Ally McCoist.

Elliott battled it out with England international Foden in the midfield at Anfield as Liverpool beat City 1-0 thanks to a Mohamed Salah goal in the second half of the match.

Jurgen Klopp showed faith in the 19-year-old by starting him in the clash against reigning Premier League champions City - and that faith payed off as Elliott put in a fantastic, energetic performance.

Elliott impressed with the defensive side of his game against City as he protected stand-in right-back James Milner from the likes of Foden and Bernardo Silva.

McCoist told Grosvenor Sport : "You look at both City and Liverpool and it’s enormously difficult to break into that team, but Harvey Elliott needs to look no further than the man he played against [on Sunday]; Phil Foden.

"I’m not comparing them at all as that would be very unfair. We were all saying that Foden should go out on loan but little did we know the plan was there and Foden is now not far short of an automatic pick.

"That’s the target Harvey Elliott must set himself. I’ve seen him enough and I think he can do it. I saw him at Blackburn and thought he was a player. His last few performances indicated he’s more than capable of being like Foden."

Elliott may well keep his place in the midfield as Liverpool will take on West Ham at Anfield on Wednesday in the Premier League as Klopp's side look to build on the momentum picked up from beating City.
