An explosion at a pharmaceutical plant in Andhra Pradesh state, southern India, has resulted in the tragic death of at least 15 workers. The incident, which occurred at the Escientia Company in Anakapalle district, also left 40 individuals injured, with some in critical condition.

The explosion, believed to have originated in the chemical reactor of the plant, led to a devastating fire. Distressing scenes were reported, with several workers experiencing skin peeling due to the intensity of the blast. Ambulances swiftly transported the injured to nearby hospitals for urgent medical attention.

Authorities suspect that the explosion may have been caused by an issue related to the plant's electricity supply. As a result, state officials have initiated an investigation to determine the exact circumstances that led to the tragic event.

The Escientia Company, a 5-year-old establishment specializing in the production of intermediate chemicals and active pharmaceutical ingredients, employs around 380 individuals who work in two shifts. Fortunately, many workers managed to escape unharmed as the explosion occurred during a lunch break.

The plant is situated in a special economic zone in Atchutapuram village, near the industrial hub of Vishakhapatnam. This region has witnessed previous industrial accidents, including a significant blast at a refinery in 1997 that claimed the lives of 22 individuals.

India, like many countries, faces challenges with fire safety compliance, with instances of builders and residents disregarding safety regulations. The 2019 incident in New Delhi, where 43 people lost their lives in a factory fire caused by an electrical short circuit, serves as a stark reminder of the importance of adhering to safety protocols.
