The New York Giants will be seeking to upgrade their offensive arsenal this offseason by adding some more talent and depth at the skill positions around quarterback Daniel Jones.
They can certainly use the draft and free agency to do that but they can also make a trade that will help upgrade their offense.
Buy Giants TicketsBrad Spielberger of Pro Football Focus believes that Arizona Cardinals star wideout DeAndre Hopkins would be a nice fit for Big Blue.
The Giants would send a 2023 second-round and a 2023 fifth-round pick to the Cardinals for Hopkins. The Giants would also assume the final two years of Hopkins’ contract, worth $34.365 million, of which zero is guaranteed.
Hopkins, who will turn 31 this summer, is still a great receiver. Spielberger points out that, “Hopkins ranked third in targets (93), fourth in receptions (64) and sixth in explosive receptions (19), and he was credited with just one drop.”
Which leads us to some sticking points. Hopkins was suspended for six games to start the 2022 season for violating the NFL’s PED policy. That’s a turnoff for a lot of teams as is the fact that he tore his MCL in 2021 and played in just 10 games that season.
The Giants likely have no appetite for Hopkins for the above-mentioned reasons, plus his age and price tag are out of their range. They are already in a bind trying to retain their own stars, most notably Jones and running back Saquon Barkley.
On another front, general manager Joe Schoen has mentioned recently that “a number one receiver doesn’t guarantee you anything,” so that’s another reason why this isn’t likely to happen.
