PFF goes cornerback for the Steelers in new mock draft

In a week, we will have a much clearer idea about what the Pittsburgh Steelers needs will be in the 2023 NFL draft. Many draft pundits are working under the assumption that cornerback Cameron Sutton will not be re-signed and cornerback will be the team’s top draft need. This is the angle Pro Football Focus went with their newest one-round mock draft and we had to take a look.

PFF opted for Maryland cornerback Deonte Banks for Pittsburgh with the No. 17 overall pick. Here’s what they had to say about the pick:

Bottom line in PFF’s 2023 NFL Draft Guide: Banks has all the physical traits of an All-Pro cornerback. He just needs to be more consistent with his technique.

“They are another team that needs cornerbacks quite badly, as well, so Deonte Banks makes a lot of sense.” — Monson

On its surface, taking Banks isn’t a bad idea. But as we have preached since the beginning, this draft needs to be all about getting value from the No. 17 and No. 32 picks at positions of need. Banks at 32 is a value at potentially a position of need. But Banks at 17 as the fourth cornerback taken doesn’t feel like value.

Let us know in the comments what you think of this pick.
