The Indianapolis Colts are like many teams this offseason in searching for an answer at the quarterback position.
After trading away Carson Wentz to the Washington Commanders, the Colts will be looking for a new starting quarterback for the fifth consecutive season. They essentially have three avenues to pursue and they are not mutually exclusive.
They could sign a veteran in free agency, trade for a veteran on the market or draft a rookie. The Colts could also do a combination of those options.
In suggesting how each team should address their biggest needs, Pro Football Focus believes the Colts should look to sign or trade for a veteran rather than draft a rookie.
“Verdict: Free Agency/Trade
This one goes without saying. The Colts don’t have a first-round pick, and even if they did, the roster is too good to waste with a mid-round rookie. The other problem is that without that first-rounder, they can’t go out and make the kind of move Denver did for Russell Wilson. That’s why, as painful as it is to say, the ideal scenario is Kirk Cousins getting off-loaded by a new Vikings regime looking to save cap space and reset at the position. The Colts are one of the few teams that have the space to eat a big chunk of Cousins’ $45 million cap hit in 2022.”
This was written before Cousins signed a one-year deal to stay with the Vikings on Sunday night so that option is no longer available.
The realistic trade piece for the Colts is Jimmy Garoppolo. He has a solid market around the league but there are concerns with his shoulder surgery and how much that may impact his value.
There are a few options for the Colts to consider in free agency like Marcus Mariota, Jameis Winston or Teddy Bridgewater.
How the Colts go about addressing the quarterback position will determine their outlook for the 2022 season so it should make for an interesting month coming up.
