The title race might not be on the line at Ibrox but there’s still plenty for Old Firm fans to bicker over.
Guards of honour, penalty kicks, signings, you name it, Celtic and Rangers will lock horns over the lot. And while the points won't matter this lunchtime, the pride and bragging rights are always on the line. John Joe Higgins emailed: “What is the problem with giving the league winners a guard of honour for their first game as champions? Surely this is a gesture of true sportsmanship and not being petty, the title was won over the long haul and the winning teams should be congratulated.”
Gers haven’t conceded a spot kick in the league all season and Robert McEwan, Mount Vernon, said: “You have to congratulate the Rangers defence. It’s an incredible statistic, and it makes you wonder how they managed to win zilch.”
Vincent McGhee, Greenock, said: “In response to Chris Lowe's claim that Celtic never conceded a penalty in the 2016/17 invincible season. He is as always wrong. Liam Boyce scored a penalty in a 2-2 draw away to Ross County. Do your homework lad.”
John Caw, via email, said: “You would think Chris Lowe would know how to spell Rangers. It starts with an R not C, as they are the only ones who get all the decisions. He can't see clearly through blue tinted glasses.”
Gers boss Michael Beale has started his summer rebuild already. But Paddy Gowans emailed: “I see Beale’s new signing will be free transfer Dujon Sterling. I hoe the rest of his rebuild goes as well, they haven't got the money to get decent players to come to Ibrox who could take the title off Celtic next season.”
Stephen Mulhern, Dumbarton, said: “I almost choked on my cornflakes this morning when I read Rangers big rebuild has started with them signing Sterling from Chelsea. Not Raheem however but Dujon on a free transfer which will no doubt have Rangers fans rushing to renew their season tickets for next season.”
Arrin Geddes, Irvine, said: “Ian McKay thinks McGregor, Hatate, Johnston, Jota , Haksabanovic, Abada among others wouldn’t get into his Rangers team. He’s probably right , because these guys are serial winners with more medals than any RIFC player has ever won, unlike his favourites.”
In terms of the game, some Rangers fans want a fresh approach to finally get one over the old rivals this season. Drew Stewart, via email, said: “Now that Beale has started to make changes he has to continue against Celtic today. His starting line up should be McCrorie; Devine; Souter; Goldson; Vilmaz; Hagi; Raskin; Cantwell; Lowry; Wright and Ure.”
Meanwhile Hibs are also looking to next term. Neil Renton, Edinburgh, said: “That’s a great piece of business for Hibs in signing Elie Youan on a permanent deal. The forward is full of potential and I can see him moving to a bigger club for millions, maybe even beating the £25 million Arsenal paid Celtic for Kieran Tierney.”
The Scottish Cup Final is on the horizon but Robbie Devlin emailed: “Is this April Fools day? I’m reading in The Record today that Inverness season ticket holders can buy up to EIGHT tickets for the final per book, it’s a disgrace that all Celtic season ticket holders don’t get the same luxury. We will be lucky if all season ticket holders on the HCTS get one. It’s a joke.”
