Police have launched an identity appeal after a man attempted to break into a safe at a service station before making off with hundreds from the till.
Northumbria Police understand a man entered Boldon Lane Service Station, South Shields, and tried to get into the safe in the rear office before threatening the cashier and fleeing with more than £200 from the cash register.
The incident, which happened at 9.05pm on October 16, left the cashier “shaken” but not injured, and saw the offender take off by bicycle along Boldon Lane past the ambulance service station, heading north.

Officers have released a CCTV image of a man they would like to speak with, who was in the area at the time and may have valuable information.
