Petr Levkovskiy trial: Teenager confessed to stabbing 'big guy' who 'tackled' him over stolen bicycle

A witness in the murder trial of a teenager accused of stabbing a stranger in a suburban Perth street said she overhead him telling his friend not to 'snitch' on him in the hours after his death.

The witness, who can not be identified, is the mother of the teenager's best friend.

She was giving evidence at the Supreme Court trial of the 16-year-old, who is alleged to have "intentionally and deliberately" stabbed 42-year-old Petr Levkovskiy in the southern suburb of Bull Creek in May last year.

Mr Levkovskiy and his wife Anna Levkovskaya were at the time pursuing claims of a bicycle stolen from a 10-year-old boy in the neighbourhood.

The woman told the court about a conversation she overheard after the stabbing, in which the teenager told her son "don't snitch on me", to which her son replied "I would never do that, I'm your best friend".

As a result, the woman told the court she called the teenager's mother to come over and the four of them sat on her son's bed.

She said while both boys initially denied involvement, the teenager admitted what he had done after his mother started crying.

'I did it', teen told mum

She said the teenager told his mother "don't worry too much if something happens, I will run".

When asked why he would have to run, the woman testified that the teenager then admitted to what he had done, saying "yes, I did it".

She told the court the teenager then said he had "done it because he was scared".

"A few boys were provoking him, so he just took a bike and ran away," she said.

"Then the big guy came and tackled him, that's when a few boys came to him so he was scared and he didn't think anything, he just did it."

The woman said the teenager then demonstrated a motion, moving his right arm parallel to the ground from right to left, before saying he had then run away and hid the knife.

"[His mother] was asking questions, 'where did you hide it?'.

"He said because he was scared, he didn't know what to do, and he ran away and hid it."

Later, the court was shown a mobile phone recording of the teenager demonstrating how he stabbed Mr Levkovskiy.

The recording, which lasts only seconds, starts with the teenager's friend asking him to "tell us who you killed today".

The teenager responds "I stabbed" before swinging his right arm across his body.

The court was told the recording was created about 12.26 pm on Sunday, May 22 last year — about two hours after the stabbing happened.

Accused asked father for passport

Later, the teenager's father gave evidence, telling the court that late that night, his son came to his home.

He said the teenager "looked very pale and nervous and a little bit panicked" before asking for his passport.

"He didn't say why but I thought it was a very odd question," the father testified.

He then asked his son why he wanted the passport and he replied he wanted to go and visit relatives in Asia.

"I asked him 'what's going on?', to which he replied 'I did something very serious'."

"He was shivering and looked nervous ... he was very reluctant to tell me."

The teenager was arrested the next day and charged with murder.

His barrister has told the trial that while his client admits he used a filleting knife to inflict the fatal stab wound, he denies that he intended to kill Mr Levkovskiy, and had only meant to stab him in the leg.
