Petr Cech agrees with Thomas Tuchel's key £93m decision for Palmeiras Club World Cup final

Chelsea's technical advisor and director Petr Cech has agreed with Thomas Tuchel's decision to reinstate Edouard Mendy back in goal for the Club World Cup final vs Palmeiras amid Kepa Arrizabalaga's recent form.

The former Czech Republic international and Blues club legend knows exactly what it takes to be the winning goalkeeper for many big games, including the 2012 Champions League final.

However, he's also been part of losing teams including the class of 2008 for the Champions League and 2012's FIFA Club World Cup team who were beaten by a single Corinthians goal.

But now looking on from afar and not a player's perspective, the Chelsea legend has weighed in on the debate that has caused plenty of talk pre-match with most fans confused by the decision to drop the £71million goalkeeper for the £22m AFCON winner.

He said on the decision to Channel 4 Sport: "We have top goalkeepers and they both perform at the highest level this season and obviously we have the courtesy of choosing one and not another which makes it hard as well.

"But the same is for all the players because you, unfortunately, have a 25 member squad and you can only field 11 players. Going back to the decision, he chose to go with Edou because he’s our number one goalkeeper and he came over here a couple of days ago, he trained and he’s prepared, fit so I think it’s a decision which is hard to make but he’s our number one goalkeeper so he plays the game."

Zsolt Low, Tuchel's number two who stood in for his German compatriot during his isolation time, also alluded to the fact Mendy has 'good experiences' in finals for his justification to this specific selection.

He said in his pre-match press conference: "We're very proud of Edou. The whole squad was happy he won the Africa cup.

"He arrives in a very good mood. Always has a big smile on his face. He's very important to the group.

"He gives a lot of energy. He was a little tired the first day, needed recovery and a good sleep, but he is fully involved in training. We're very happy that he's healthy and absolutely in good shape with good experience behind him. He's ready to play the game."
