A petition to remove Jamie Lynn Spears from Netflix series Sweet Magnolias has gained much traction after almost reaching its goal of 25,000 signatures.

Fans of Britney Spears and the show urge the platform to drop the former Nickelodeon star following her alleged lack of support for her sister during the conservatorship battle. The petition has reached a staggering 24,754 signatures (at the time of writing) and is just hundreds away from its goal.

Sweet Magnolias, the show which follows the endeavours of three best friends from South Carolina, proved hugely popular among viewers and has since been renewed for a second series, expected to air in 2022.

In season one, Jamie Lynn played the supporting role of Noreen Fitzgibbons, a mistress-turned-fiance Noreen Fitzgibbons. However, the return of the show will see her as a regular cast member.

The Change.org petition explained that due to Britney Spears “corrupt and abusive conservatorship”, they “petition to terminate Jamie Lynn’s contract on the show.”

“Jamie Lynn Spears did absolutely nothing to help her as this was going on,” they said. “In fact, she fed off her sisters conservatorship and took advantage of her sisters money and well-being.

“Jamie Lynn could easily file a petition to terminate the conservatorship, yet she hasn’t. She instead allows the exploitation of her sister to continue.”

The petition creator continued to ask how the streaming platform could “allow someone the “fame” of whom continues to ride her sister's coattails, after knowing she does nothing to stop the abuse to her sister?”

News of the petition spilt across on social media too, where passionate fans expressed their concerns with the 30-year-old being in the show.

One suggested boycotting Sweet Magnolias until Netflix removed Jamie Lynn’s scenes, while others highlighted the hypocrisy of the platform also airing a documentary focused on Britney’s conservatorship.

In June, Jamie Lynn broke her silence on her sister’s conservatorship after taking to Instagram Stories with a series of video clips.

“The only reason I haven’t before is because I felt like until my sister was able to speak for herself and say what she felt she needed to say publicly, that it wasn’t my place and it wasn’t the right thing to do,” she said.

“But now that she’s very clearly spoken and said what she needed to say, I feel like I can follow her lead and say what I feel I need to say.”

She continued, “Since the day I was born, I’ve only loved adored and supported my sister. I mean this is my freaking big sister, before any of this bullsh*t.”

“I can assure you that I’ve supported my sister long before there was a hashtag, and I’ll support her long after.”

The next hearing is due to take place in November.
