A petition to try and save Ayr Ice Rink from closure has launched - with almost 1,500 people backing the cause in a matter of hours today.
We told last night how the rink, which opened in 1972 on its current site at Limekiln Road, faces the axe at the end of September.
Owners Ayrshire Curlers Ltd are blaming a spike in energy costs, which will leave hundreds of young figure skaters and ice hockey players among those without a home.
Now a campaign has been mobilised to try and save the building from shutting its doors for good in a matter of months.
A change.org petition started by Savannah Cuff reads: "Ayr Ice Rink has been situated at Limekiln Road since 1972.
"This IS home to Kyle Figure Skating Club, Ayr Figure Skating Club, Ayr Curling Club and Ayr Bruins Junior Ice Hockey.
"There is a vast age range of people who attend these well established clubs from all different backgrounds, but all with one thing in common, ICE SPORTS!!
"The potential closure of Ayr Ice Rink could have a devastating impact on South Ayrshire's children and adults, we will see reduced physical activity, socialisation, mental stimulation alongside the loss of a safe, friendly and welcoming space for many.
"A joint collaborative approach from all who use Ayr Ice Rink to #saveayricerink is needed now more than ever!"
