Former Manchester United goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel says that Newcastle are a team to 'avoid' in the Carabao Cup this season.
Newcastle defeated Crystal Palace on penalties after a goalless draw at St James' Park on Wednesday, to reach the fourth round of the competition for just the second time in six seasons. The League Cup appears to be a realistic chance of silverware for Newcastle, who are also flying in the Premier League, with six wins from their last seven league games propelling them into third-place.
Eddie Howe's side have been handed another home draw against his former employers and fellow Premier League rivals AFC Bournemouth in the next round.

The Magpies have never lifted the League Cup, but Schmeichel is intrigued to see how things will pan out with the competition being particularly unpredictable this season.
"When I picked Newcastle, I’m thinking don’t pick up number 16, they’re so full of confidence," Schmeichel revealed on Sky Sports. "They’re a team to avoid. They have to remember Liverpool or Man City will still be in there. Hopefully Man United will be in there, there’s still potential for a strong team.
"We’ve seen over the last three days in this competition, anything can happen. It’s really interesting to watch because you see something different."
