Former Donald Trump White House adviser Peter Navarro has been released from a Miami federal prison after serving a four-month sentence for defying a subpoena from the January 6 congressional committee. Navarro is set to attend the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee, where Trump has been nominated as the GOP's 2024 presidential candidate.
Navarro is one of two individuals from Trump's circle convicted for failing to comply with subpoenas from the House Select Committee that investigated the January 6, 2021, insurrection. Steve Bannon, another Trump adviser, is currently serving a four-month sentence in a federal prison in Connecticut.
During his time in prison, Navarro, in his 70s, worked as a law library clerk. His prison consultant, Sam Mangel, mentioned that Navarro was well-liked and respected by fellow inmates. Mangel also noted that Navarro's work in the prison library provided him with an opportunity to write.
Navarro was found guilty last summer on two counts of contempt for failing to produce documents and not attending an interview demanded by the committee. He had attempted to argue that he was acting under Trump's direction, who had invoked executive privilege, but the judge did not allow this defense due to insufficient evidence.
Despite an unsuccessful emergency appeal to delay his prison sentence, Navarro is appealing his conviction. The federal correctional facility where Navarro served his sentence is one of the oldest prison camps in the country, housing fewer than 200 inmates in an aging infrastructure, with a significant Puerto Rican population.
