The Los Angeles Rams have reportedly been fielding calls for All-Pro cornerback Jalen Ramsey.
Peter King recently explored the possibility of a Ramsey trade in his “Football Morning in America” column. The Rams are looking to stockpile draft picks and unload Ramsey’s contract. The acquiring team would have Ramsey under control for three more seasons (until Ramsey is 31 years old) with cap hits of $17 million (2023), $19.5 million (2024), and $20 million (2025). The acquiring team could restructure his contract by converting his base salary into a signing bonus to make that 2023 cap hit much less.
King projected that the Rams would look for a low first-round pick in a trade for Ramsey. He named three potential suitors given that projection — The Buffalo Bills (28 overall), The Dallas Cowboys (27 overall), and the Kansas City Chiefs (31 overall).
The Bills and Cowboys make a bit more sense here from a personnel perspective than Kansas City does. Not only did the Chiefs draft three starting-quality rookies in 2022, but they also have CB L’Jarius Sneed under contract for one more season. Instead of trading draft capital to acquire a player and a big contract, it could make more sense for the team to plan to extend Sneed in 2024 or potentially plan to keep their cornerback group cheap with what is considered to be a good draft class coming up in 2023.
Ramsey is still a highly productive player. He has eight interceptions and three forced fumbles in the past two seasons, along with 34 passes defended. He remains one of the NFL’s better man-coverage cornerbacks and has thrived in run defense as well.
