Peter Kavanagh's is named Pub of the Year 2019 by Liverpool CAMRA

One of the city’s most historic pubs has been named Liverpool Pub of the Year.

Peter Kavanagh’s, built in 1844, has been given the accolade by Liverpool and District CAMRA.

The Egerton Street pub, on the fringes of Toxteth and the city centre, beat hundreds of city pubs to the title.

Augustus John, The Dispensary, Lion Tavern and Pen Factory were also highly commended and made it to the final five pubs.

However Peter Kavanagh's was named the top pub for 2019 after twelve CAMRA judges visited all pubs and scored Kavanagh's the highest.

Speaking about the win, licensee, Rita Smith said: "It's absolutely amazing, I have been in the pub 27 years and this is the first time we've ever got the pub of the year award.

From Benidorm to New York - 11 brilliantly Scouse pubs abroad

"I'm presuming it's because we've got good beer, nice people, good music and it's very much a community, we all help each other out.

"Maybe that's what came across when the judges come in, maybe they just got the sense of community in th pub."

Peter Kavanagh’s is known for its stained glass windows and Charles Dickens-themed murals.

The much-loved city pub will now go forward to the Merseyside Pub of the Year Competition along with the Cricketers from St Helens, Sparrowhawk from Southport and the Lazy Landlord from Wirral.
