The nomination of Pete Hegseth to lead the Department of Defense has faced a narrow victory over a Democratic-led filibuster, with a 51-49 vote advancing it towards a final confirmation vote expected in the coming days.
Despite allegations of sexual assault, alcohol abuse, and financial mismanagement of a veterans' charity, Hegseth's nomination has received strong backing from the Trump administration. The GOP Senators Lisa Murkowski and Susan Collins joined Democratic opposition to the nomination, citing concerns over Hegseth's lack of experience and the serious allegations against him.
In response to the allegations, Hegseth has denied any wrongdoing. He has pledged to overhaul the Pentagon, focusing on what he considers 'woke' policies and streamlining the department's bureaucracy.

Senator Murkowski expressed her decision to oppose the nomination, stating, 'While the allegations of sexual assault and excessive drinking are troubling, Mr. Hegseth's admitted past behaviors, including infidelity, demonstrate a lack of judgment unsuitable for a leadership role in our armed forces.'
Republicans can afford to lose three of their members on the final confirmation vote and still secure Hegseth's appointment, provided all Democrats vote against him.
