President-elect Donald Trump's nominee to lead the Defense Department, Pete Hegseth, engaged in discussions with Maine Sen. Susan Collins on Wednesday in an effort to garner enough votes for his confirmation. Despite facing allegations of excessive drinking and sexual misconduct, Hegseth expressed determination to move forward.

During the meeting, Collins raised concerns about the allegations surrounding Hegseth, including reports of drinking and a settlement payment made in response to a sexual assault accusation that he denies. The conversation covered a wide range of topics, such as sexual assault in the military, Ukraine, and NATO. Collins emphasized the need for a thorough background check and a formal hearing before making a decision.

Hegseth, an infantry combat veteran and former host on 'Fox & Friends' weekend show, is actively seeking support from senators, particularly those who have expressed reservations about his personal history and lack of management experience. He acknowledged the importance of the confirmation process and expressed hope in earning Collins' backing as he continues to engage with senators.

Collins, known for her independent stance within the Republican Party, has previously opposed some of Trump's Cabinet picks. Alongside Alaska Sen. Lisa Murkowski, she has demonstrated a willingness to challenge the administration when necessary. Hegseth's meetings with senators like Joni Ernst, who has advocated for addressing sexual assault within the military, underscore his efforts to address concerns and secure votes.

With Republicans holding a slim majority in the Senate, Hegseth cannot afford to lose more than three votes. Trump has intensified his support for Hegseth, emphasizing his belief in the nominee's capabilities. Hegseth is scheduled to meet with Pennsylvania Sen. John Fetterman, a Democrat, on Thursday, further highlighting his bipartisan outreach in pursuit of confirmation.

As the confirmation process unfolds, Hegseth remains focused on engaging with senators from both parties and addressing any reservations they may have. The outcome of these discussions will play a crucial role in determining Hegseth's path to leading the Defense Department under the new administration.
