President-elect Donald Trump's pick for defense secretary, Pete Hegseth, engaged in meetings with key GOP senators to address concerns about his fitness for the role following reports of past misconduct allegations. Hegseth responded to the scrutiny on social media, displaying a confident and combative stance by garnering support and affirming his determination to secure confirmation.

During the meetings, Sen. John Thune acknowledged Hegseth's presentation of a comprehensive plan to address issues within the Department of Defense, describing the encounter as positive. Sen. Shelley Moore Capito also had a favorable meeting but refrained from confirming her support for Hegseth's nomination at this stage.

Sen. Josh Hawley expressed uncertainty about Hegseth's candidacy in light of personal concerns, while Sen. Bill Hagerty highlighted Hegseth's assurance of Trump's continued endorsement. Sen. Kevin Cramer indicated potential support for Hegseth pending any unforeseen developments, noting Hegseth's commitment to abstain from alcohol while in office and addressing previous allegations.

Sen. Joni Ernst refrained from disclosing her stance following a thorough discussion with Hegseth, while Sen. Eric Schmitt mentioned questioning Hegseth about misconduct allegations, to which Hegseth denied any wrongdoing. Schmitt also noted Hegseth's voluntary disclosure of his decision to refrain from alcohol.
