If you needed any more evidence that the Seahawks are happy with Geno Smith leading their quarterback room this year, here’s your final answer.
Speaking yesterday in an interview on Sports Radio 93.3 KJR-FM in Seattle, coach Pete Carroll said he doesn’t see his team making a trade for a quarterback – per ESPN.
“I don’t see us making a trade for anybody at all. I don’t see that happening. But we’re certainly going to continue to be open to chances to help our club, and meanwhile we’re just going to be battling and competing our tails off. There’s always possibilities, so we keep open to that.”
Seattle fans could be forgiven for not taking anything Carroll says at face value anymore, but we’re pretty sure he’s not fibbing in this case.
There’s an outside chance Drew Lock could win the QB1-competition over the summer and wind up starting but he wasn’t able to beat out Teddy Bridgewater in Denver last year so we shouldn’t assume he will take Smith’s spot in 2022. Smith may not be an exciting QB1 but the unfortunate fact is he’s the most-qualified option to run this offense in the absence of Russell Wilson.
More importantly, the quarterbacks who are actually supposed to be on the trade block don’t make sense for the Seahawks, anyway. The 49ers aren’t dealing Jimmy Garoppolo to a division rival so he’s off the board. Baker Mayfield doesn’t seem like a fit for Carroll and the latest reporting suggests they were never really interested in him anyway.
The only maybe is Gardner Minshew, who’s playing backup in Philly behind Jalen Hurts. However, this one is almost purely a fan and media driven name. The Eagles have given no indication they’re willing to part with Minshew even though Hurts appears to be their guy.
Ever since Seattle re-signed Smith we have been assuming the team wouldn’t add another quarterback this year outside of a major injury to either Geno or Lock. Like it or not, we’ll probably have to wait until 2023 to find out who Carroll and John Schneider really believe can replace Russ.
