Pete Carroll comments on absence of Jamal Adams on Monday night

The latest chapter in the interminable Jamal Adams saga is that he’s dealing with a knee injury and had to sit out last week. Apparently he was not at Lumen Field for Monday night’s Seahawks game against the Eagles, and the team wasn’t sure where he was.

Speaking on 710 ESPN radio yesterday, head coach Pete Carroll said he thinks that Adams was at home, but seemed understanding that it was difficult for him not to play.

“I think he was home… It was hard on him. We talked about it, and how he was going to deal with it. And he didn’t need to be there… It’s been so difficult on him. He has not been able to get all the way where he’s got everything feeling right. So, we’ve been working with him all season, working the recovery vs. the preparation mode. It’s been hard. It’s a very, very difficult injury and he’s doing everything he can.”

Adams came into this season having missed as many regular season games due to injuries as he had played for the Seahawks since being traded from the Jets. He has missed five more in 2023.

On the field, Adams has had made some nice tackles for a loss, but he’s also missed nine tackles (15.8%) and allowed a 111.7 passer rating in coverage. For the season PFF has Adams graded out well as a pass rusher (85.5) but poorly in run defense (52.8), coverage (50.7) and just 54.9 overall.

Injuries and disappointing results have been business-as-usual for Adams since the start of the 2021 season, though. This year there’s a new wrinkle: Adams getting into public disputes with people who are non-opponents. He’s been fined $50,000 by the NFL for berating two separate unaffiliated neurotrauma consultants and he’s made a spectacle of himself on Twitter.
