Two pet rabbits have been found dumped in an Asda cardboard box on a country road in Airdrie.
The animals were discovered by a member of the public on Caldercruix Road, North Lanarkshire, on Saturday, July 30. Scottish SPCA officers were alerted to the incident and found one of the bunnies to be chipped.
The animal welfare charity has warned that the pets would not have survived the elements and would have been eventually hunted by predators. Officers are appealing to members of the public who may have witnessed the cruel dumping to come forward.
Scottish SPCA inspector, Robyn Myszor, said, “The two female rabbits were found dumped in an Asda cardboard box. One is brown and white and the other is fawn. We believe one to be a possible Holland lop and the other a cross lop.
“Although there are wild rabbits living in Scotland, these rabbits are domesticated animals and would not have survived the elements and predators in the wild. We appreciate that the person who left the rabbits may have intended for the animals to be found but this is not the right way to give up an animal if you can no longer care for them.
“Thankfully, they are unharmed and are now at one of our animal rescue and rehoming centres where they are receiving the care they need. If anyone recognises these rabbits we would ask that they contact our confidential animal helpline on 03000 999 999.”
