Pest control expert on 3 instant ways to keep pesky flies away from your home

You know what it's like, you open your window to let that cool breeze in and within minutes you're confronted by pesky flies. And with the summer rapidly approaching, the chances of those annoying insects flying around your home increases.

Luckily, pest control expert Walter Murphy has revealed a few ways to deter flies without having to use fly spray around the house - or swat them with the nearest object. The tips he shares involve scents that flies do not like but which aren't unpleasant for the humans in the home.

Using the methods below can deter the pests from buzzing in through open windows or doors - or get them to make a swift exit.

1. Essential oils

Murphy says that essential oils such as peppermint or lemongrass can help to get rid of flies. Many essential oils have insect repellent properties that are toxic to flies, insects and can also help get rid of ants, as seen in LeicestershireLive.

Walter said "anything that contains essential oils such as lemongrass or peppermint will keep flies at bay". Small bottles of these oils can be purchased in health stores and then diluted in a spray bottle. Use five to 10 drops of oil per 30ml of water.

2. Cinnamon

Cinnamon is also another natural scent and ingredient that can be used as a way to banish flies from your home. The smell is very potent and can be toxic to flies, too.

Walter explained: "Flies hate the smell of cinnamon. You may consider purchasing a cinnamon-infused air freshener to reduce the number of flies in your home."

He added: "Burning cinnamon candles is also another great way to get rid of flies, as the smell will spread easily around the property."

3. Alcohol

If you’ve always got a bottle of vodka in your home, this could come in handy as a fly repellent. Walter said: "Flies cannot bear the smell of vodka, so you may want to use a spray that contains vodka to ensure that no flies enter your home.

"You can also place vodka bags around your home, especially in areas like the kitchen, in order to prevent any food contamination."
