Perthshire's Emma lands leading role at national law firm Blackadders

A Perthshire solicitor has expressed her “immense privilege” at being announced as joint managing partner of national law firm Blackadders.

Emma Gray, who lives in the Carse of Gowrie, and Ryan McKay will both take the helm on an initial three-year term.

The duo will replace long-serving managing partner Johnston Clark, named Scottish Legal Awards Managing Partner of the Year in 2019, who will stand down on July 31.

Originally from Dundee, Emma gained 13 years of experience in a top-tier legal firm in Edinburgh before returning to the Tayside city in 2013 to head up the commercial property team at Blackadders, where she has excelled.

Following the announcement, she said: “It is an immense privilege to be elected as joint managing partner of Blackadders.

“I am looking forward to working with Ryan and our talented colleagues across the business to implement the firm’s strategic plan.

“I do so with huge appreciation for Johnston’s drive and vision which has shaped the success of the firm to date.”

Blackadders has offices in Perth, Dundee, Aberdeen, Edinburgh and Glasgow and provides business and private client services.

Congratulating Emma and Ryan on their appointment Mr Clark said: “Much has been achieved since I was first appointed in 1999, but two of the many tasks of a managing partner are to leave office with the firm in better shape than when they started and to secure their own succession.

“We have come through the COVID period, the second lengthy crisis period of my tenure stronger than ever and now is the right time for the next generation to take charge, with my full support.

“I will continue as chief executive of Blackadders Wealth Management LLP.

“I am looking forward to working with younger colleagues in the executry team, and will continue to develop my legal defence practice.”

Head of dispute resolution Ryan said: “Being elected joint managing partner at Blackadders is a great honour and I look forward to playing my part in executing the next stage of the firm’s strategic plan.”

Chairman Peter Duff added: “I am delighted that Emma and Ryan are bringing their talents and strong leadership to the next phase of our strategic journey.”
