Perth to host weekend of music, classic cars, world culture and dance for Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Weekend in June

Perth will host a weekend of music, classic cars, world culture, dance and community celebration for the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Weekend this June.

To mark 70 years of service by Her Majesty The Queen and the return of large in-person events to the streets of Perth, there is a fully-packed weekend of fun and family friendly entertainment running from Thursday, June 2 to Sunday, June 5 in the city centre.

Perth itself was named as one of Scotland’s first champion cities as part of the Queen’s Green Canopy, as part of the Jubilee celebrations.

The action kicks off on Thursday, June 2 with a free Music Through the Jubilee Years Concert in Perth Concert Hall.

It will be a night of music and nostalgia to mark 70 years of memories.

Following the concert, ceremonial beacons will be lit across Perth and Kinross as part of a national network of beacons.

To offset the environmental impact of this, seven trees are to be planted in the area for each beacon, in addition to those already planned as part of Perth’s Queen’s Green Canopy Champion City status.

On Saturday, June 4 there’s a classic car display in the city centre, including vintage cars from 1952 and other classic vehicles of note.

For anyone looking for something a bit more active, there is also the chance to take part in a Jubilee 5k race around the North Inch that evening.

On Sunday, June 5 Perth will welcome people into the city centre for the Perthshire Mela, a celebration of world music, dance and culture, with a parade down Tay Street culminating in activities on the North Inch.

Lord lieutenant of Perth and Kinross Stephen Leckie said: “Over the past couple of years one of the things we’ve really missed is the opportunity to bring people together in the kind of community celebration Perth is famed for.

“The Platinum Jubilee Celebration Weekend is packed full of events for people of all ages to enjoy music, dance and culture together.”

He added: “I look forward to welcoming you there.”

Chief executive of Perth and Kinross Council Thomas Glen said: “Council staff are working closely with the lieutenancy, community groups and performers to create an unforgettable series of events to mark the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee.

“Activities like these not only bring our communities together, but also bring a refreshed vibrancy to our city centre and public spaces to encourage visitors and residents to enjoy all that we have to offer in Perth and Kinross.”

Tickets will be available from Wednesday, April 20 at www.horsecross.co.uk
