Perth school runs to raise money for cancer cause

More than 200 pupils and staff from Perth High School will be walking and running 5k at tomorrow’s Perth parkrun in memory of former pupil Gavin Russell.

The pupils will be wearing different colours of t-shirt – according to what house they belong to – and are raising money for Teenage Cancer Trust.

The money for the t-shirts has been provided by support from the following organisations: KM Dental, Tayside Christian Fellowship, Perth Ultimate Frisbee, PHS PTA, GS Brown, LW Haddow, The Bathroom Company and Struans Motor Group.

Taking place on Saturday, April 23, it is the third year of the fundraising event.

In 2018, just over 100 pupils took part and this year looks set to double that figure.

The last two events raised £18,841.50 in total and organisers are hoping to raise another £5000 this year.

Gavin was formerly a pupil at Perth High School. Sadly he passed away in the gentle care of Cornhill Macmillan Centre, with his family at his side, on September 20, 2021.

Gavin Russell from Perth passed away in September 2021 after bravely fighting Ewing sarcoma (Submitted by Lorraine and Craig Russell)

Gavin was only 20 when he died following a battle with the rare bone cancer Ewing sarcoma, which hits fewer than 30 children in the UK each year.

He was the deeply loved son of Lorraine and Craig Russell and brother of Fraser, all who live in Perth.

On October 5 last year there was a service of thanksgiving for Gavin’s life at St Leonard’s-in-the-Fields Church and in the lead up to Christmas, a garden of festive lights at Beechgrove Place raised £8392 in Gavin’s name for children suffering from Ewing sarcoma cancer and delighted Perth residents with the colourful display.

Gavin learned he was ill when he was 13 in 2014. Following his years at Perth High School, Gavin was a student at Perth College.

Gavin had dreams of becoming a sound engineer.
