Perth police launch probe after fire extinguishers used to target vehicles

A police investigation is underway following reports of three young men targeting vehicles at a Perth car park with fire extinguishers.

Officers were called to the Smart Parking multi-storey car park on Kinnoull Street at around 8.50pm on March 24 over the incident.

One eyewitness said that cars and motorbikes parked in bays in the facility were sprayed with the white foam from the extinguishers by three young men, before leaving the scene.

CCTV in the car park facility has been handed over to Tayside Police by Smart Parking to help identify and locate the culprits.

Following the incident on March 24, the eyewitness said: “If your teenage kids come home covered in white powder tonight chances are they have set off a fire extinguisher at Kinnoull Street multi[-storey car park].

“They have sprayed it over cars and motorbikes. Luckily they were stupid enough to look at the camera while doing so.

“Police are involved hence why no pictures of them doing it are being posted.

“They do have clear mugshots of the kids involved and the police are currently looking at the CCTV and looking for them.”

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Officers were called around 8.50pm to a report of three males mis-using fire extinguishers in a car park on Kinnoull Street, Perth.

“Enquiries are continuing.”

A Smart Parking spokesperson said: “As a security measure Smart Parking does operate CCTV cameras at the site, and have shared the related footage to this incident with the police to help them track down the culprits.”

Perth City Centre ward councillor Peter Barrett said: “I was made aware of the incident after seeing a Facebook post where a local resident warned parents to look out for their sons arriving home covered in fire extinguisher contents.

“I hope that the CCTV footage leads to a positive identification of the culprits and that the police investigation leads to the swift arrest of these vandals.”

Fellow ward councillor Chris Ahern added: “This is a completely irresponsible action by these males.

“Fire extinguishers like other safety equipment is there for a reason.

“Misuse is potentially a risk to life. I hope these individuals are located and are charged.

“They would think differently if it was one of their relatives that needed to use the extinguisher only to find some idiot had emptied it for fun.”
