Perth boxer Luke Bibby has a Commonwealth Games dream

Perth boxer Luke Bibby is setting his sights high and determined to turn out for Scotland at the next Commonwealth Games.

The 20-year-old, who has banked a number of titles throughout the age groups, is on the right track for light welterweight success in two years’ time.

Currently at a national training camp in Brighton, Luke’s determination to improve is stronger than ever and he is ready to put in the hours of work.

The next Commonwealth Games swings around in 2022, with Birmingham the host.

Luke, a Perth Railway Boxing Club member, told the PA: “I want to win the Scottish next year and then push for the Commonwealth Games in 2022. That is my goal.

“I know I can beat anyone at my weight. I know I can, I believe that 100 per cent.

“I just need to stay consistent, believe in myself, work hard and then I can achieve whatever I put my mind to.

“I spar with all of the top boys and the level is obviously high. But I believe I’m right up there.

“I’ve won titles through the years so now it’s just about pushing to the next level.”

Luke is hoping to follow in the footsteps of other local athletes who have represented the region and Scotland at the Commonwealth Games.

The likes of Gavin Rumgay, Laura Muir, Eilidh Doyle, Camilla Hattersley and Stephen Milne have turned out at the global spectacle in recent times.

“A big inspiration is to make everyone proud of where I come from,” said Luke. “There aren’t a lot of people at this level boxing-wise in Perth.

“I also want to be an idol to the younger generation. It’s 16 or 17 when it gets hard, when all your pals started going out.

“But if you can keep training you can do massive things.

“It would mean the world to box at the Commonwealth Games. I’d love it and it would be huge for Perth as well.”

More from Luke in Friday’s PA.
