Perth and Meigle join forces to great effect as excitement for women's cricket grows further

Women’s cricket in Perth and Kinross is continuing its upward trajectory.

Evidence of impressive progress was clear at the weekend when a team comprising players of Perth Doo’cot and Meigle joined forces for a special first game.

The newly-formed hardball team proudly travelled to Grange Loan in Edinburgh for a friendly fixture with Carlton.

And not only did the local ladies perform with distinction, they also earned victory.

That has fuelled determination further for a county squad to participate in league cricket next season.

Grace Carson, ladies’ coach at Perth Doo’cot, was delighted to link-up with Meigle to keep the ball rolling in the right direction.

“I previously went over to give Meigle a hand starting up their ladies’ team,” she explained to the Perthshire Advertiser.

“There were a few who had played hardball before and, at Doo’cot, our numbers were growing quite rapidly.

“So we got in touch with Carlton and they said we could come along for a game. Doo’cot and Meigle joined up together to make the team - and they ended up winning.

“The same 12 players are keen to have the county team next season and it has all progressed very naturally. The win definitely boosts confidence.

“Looking back a year ago until now, everyone has got stuck in and has trusted the process.”

The team’s continuing development is of course reason for excitement and Grace hopes that numbers can grow further. Longer-term, entering a team in the Women’s Premier League is an ambition.

“The group has been so good and they are very committed,” Grace added.

“Once we get a county team sorted, hopefully we can then think about entering the Women’s Premier League.

“That is definitely something that some of the ladies have highlighted an interest in.”
