Perth and Kinross residents endure tailbacks and disruption due to heavy Storm Eunice snowfall at the weekend

Perth and Kinross residents endured travel and power disruptions at the weekend as the region became engulfed in a blanket of snow brought on by Storm Eunice.

The turbulent weather landed on Friday with the A9 at Tibbermore, near Perth, blocked for around two-and-a-half hours due to HGVs becoming stuck in the snowfall.

By noon, as much as eight inches of snow had fallen in Braco, with thick layers of white found across the region from Burrelton to Perth to Glenlyon.

The snowgates on the A93 at Spittal of Glenshee, as well as Glenshee Ski Centre, had to be closed on Friday with drivers advised to seek an alternative route.

Drivers on the M90 between Perth and Kinross reported being left at a standstill, while on the A9 near Cairnie Braes lorries became stuck leading to long tailbacks.

The Met Office had issued its yellow weather warning for the county for February 18 heeding “heavy snow and some strong winds” brought on by Storm Eunice.

The storm bumped into cold air as it arrived from the Atlantic, creating snowfall in central and southern Scotland, as well as Northern Ireland and northern England.

Temperatures dropped to below zero in parts throughout the day.

A further yellow weather warning was issued to Perth and Kinross for ice on Saturday, and then high winds over Sunday and Monday.

Perthshire North MSP John Swinney said he chaired a meeting of the Scottish Government’s resilience team to respond to the storm.

Much of the snow has since dissipated and Perth and Kinross is to earn a reprieve with no weather warnings advised for this week.
