Person transported to hospital after car flips onto its roof on A19 near Washington

A person has been transported to hospital after a car flipped onto its roof on the A19.

Police, paramedics and firefighters rushed to the northbound carriageway, between the A183 (Chester Road) and the A1231 (Sunderland Highway), just after 6.30pm on Wednesday evening.

The North East Ambulance Service (NEAS) said they were called to a road traffic incident in which a car had rolled over. The northbound carriageway was closed while the emergency services dealt with the incident.

One person was transported by ambulance to Sunderland Royal Hospital in Sunderland with minor injuries.

There were significant delays and queuing traffic in the area. Around an hour later, at about 7.30pm, one lane of the northbound carriageway was reopened to traffic.

A NEAS spokesperson said: "We received a call at 18:27 to reports of a road traffic incident on the A19 north in Washington in which a car had rolled over.

"We sent a clinical team leader, a Hazardous Area Response Team and an emergency ambulance crew to the scene and took one patient with minor injuries to Sunderland Royal Hospital."

The inside lane of the A19 northbound has remained closed while the vehicle is recovered.

Reports made to police suggest that two other vehicles may have been involved in the incident.

A spokesperson for Northumbria Police said: "Just prior to half past six we received a report from a member of the public that there was a three vehicle RTC at that location. Ambulance and fire brigade have been with us down at the scene."

A spokesperson for Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue confirmed that they attended the collision but were unable to provide any further details at this time.
