Person taken to hospital after police descend on Melvin Square

A person has been taken to hospital following a crash between a lorry and a pedestrian, police have confirmed. Witnesses reported a "big police presence" and cordon, which had been set up in Melvin Square in Knowle after the crash. One man has been arrested on suspicion of driving while unfit through drugs in connection with the crash.

The South Western Ambulance NHS Foundation Trust (SWASFT) were called to the scene at 10.51am on Tuesday, May 23 before contacting Avon and Somerset Police, who arrived shortly before 11am. One woman, the pedestrian, was taken to Bristol Royal Infirmary.

Her injuries are not believed to be life-threatening. A spokesperson for the South Western Ambulance NHS Foundation Trust (SWASFT) said: “We were called at 10.51hrs to an incident in the Bristol area. A double-crew land ambulance was sent, and one individual was taken to Bristol Royal Infirmary.”

Witnesses reported seeing a "big police presence" at the scene in Knowle West, adding the road appeared to be "completely shut off". Buses were forced to divert around the road closure for a duration while emergency services attended the scene.

A spokesperson for Avon and Somerset Police said: “At just before 11am today (Tuesday 23 May), we were called by the ambulance service to attend a collision in Melvin Square, Bristol, involving a lorry and a pedestrian.

"The pedestrian, a woman, has been taken to hospital for treatment. Her condition is not believed to be life-threatening.”

They added: "We can confirm a 28-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of driving while unfit through drugs."
