Person rescued from water after trying to get across Cork bay when tide cut off

Someone was plucked from the water after getting into difficulty when the tide cut them off.

The RNLI were called out to Ringabella Bay after two people who had been rock climbing tried to swim across to Fountainstown after getting stranded.

They were spotted by two kayakers who then contacted someone who called the situation into the Valentia coast guard centre.

The same person then rang Funnkytown Adventure Centre nearby and they sent a crew out, meanwhile the Crosshaven RNLI were also mobilising.

As help was being sought the two climbers then decided they'd swim across "despite the female not being a swimmer" according to a source. It's understood the two kayakers had advised them to stay where they were until help arrived but they went into the water anyway.

The Funkytown crew got out and located one casualty who they took onboard. The other managed to make it back to shore themselves.

Thankfully the casualty was OK and they were dropped off at Fountainstown beach.

The Funkytown crew then returned to their base while the Crosshaven volunteers were stood down.

At the Crosshaven helm was James Fegan who praised the team at Funkytown for reacting so quickly to what could've been a very serious incident.

He said: "Members of the public need to be aware of the times of high and low water before crossing sandbanks and if they do get cut off by the tide to dial 999/112 and ask for the Coast Guard.

"Stay High, Stay Dry and Stay Put until the rescue services attend."

The adventure centre had been closed for the day, but managed to mobilise straight away after being told of the pair in danger.
