Person dies after being hit by train

A person has died after been hit by a train this morning.

British Transport Police confirmed emergency services were called to the line, between Wigan North Western and Preston, after reports of a person on the tracks. Paramedics attended but the person was pronounced dead at the scene.

A National Rail spokesperson said emergency services arrived at the scene, since 4.39am on Thursday, July 21. Officers are now investigating the circumstances surrounding their death.

A spokesperson for the force said: "British Transport Police were called to the line near Wigan at 3.34am today (21 July) following reports of a casualty on the tracks. Paramedics also attended and sadly a person was pronounced dead at the scene. Officers are currently working to identify the full circumstances behind their death."

LancsLive reports all lines between the stations are currently blocked due to the incident. This is affecting routes run by a number of services including the Avanti West Coast between London Euston and Lancaster, the Caledonian Sleeper between London Euston and Inverness, and the Northern service between Manchester Airport and Barrow-in-Furness.

A National Rail spokesperson said: "A person has been hit by a train between Wigan North Western and Preston. As all lines are currently blocked, trains may be cancelled or diverted.

"If you’ve been affected by what happened on the network today, there is always someone to talk to. You can contact the Samaritans on 116 123 from any phone for a confidential chat."

Avanti West Coast spokesperson said: "Due to emergency services dealing with an incident between Wigan North Western and Preston all lines are blocked. Please check your journey before you travel."
