Person dies after being hit by train as ScotRail cancels multiple services

A person has died after being hit by a train in Ayrshire this evening.

The incident happened near Newton-on-Ayr station shortly after 5pm.

Emergency crews including Police Scotland and Scottish Ambulance Service rushed to the scene.

Tragically, the individual was pronounced dead upon arrival.

British Transport Police have confirmed that the incident is not being treated as suspicious.

They added that a report will be sent to the Procurator Fiscal.

The line between Troon and Ayr stations was closed following the incident, but has since reopened.

ScotRail have confirmed that although train services between Glasgow Central and Ayr are also returning to normal, some services will still be cancelled, delayed or revised.

In the meantime, for stuck travellers, ticket acceptance is currently in place with Stagecoach West buses including the number 4 Glasgow Kilmarnock Prestwick Ayr, number 11 Kilwinning - Irvine - Ardrossan and number 14 Irvine - Troon - Ayr.

ScotRail has requested buses, too, for those bound for Kilwinning and Ayr.

Due to limited availability of replacement coaches, however, the company is advising customers to make their own alternative transport arrangements.

A BTP spokesperson said: "We were called at 5.13pm to reports of a casualty on the tracks near Newton-on-Ayr station.

"Officers and paramedics attended but sadly a person was declared deceased at the scene.

"The incident is not being treated as suspicious and a report will be prepared for the Procurator Fiscal."
