Person dresses up in alien costume to do essential food shop

An alien was spotted out on the streets... on their way to the shops to get essentials during the coronavirus lockdown.

Police officers in Wigan stumbled upon a close encounter with the fourth kind while patrolling the streets in Platt Bridge.

The alarmed officers were not delirious with Covid-19 restrictions - a resident actually dressed up in a luminous green alien costume to do their essential food shop.

The costume came complete with highlighter-green gloves, shoes and, of course, a huge alien mask with big, black eyes.

But the resident clearly still had practicality in mind - throwing on a black hoodie in case it got chilly and bringing along a bag to keep their bits and bobs in.

Police added stars to the photo after their close encounter with the fourth kind (Greater Manchester Police)

The purpose of the costume, perhaps as a form of protection or an attempt to cheer up worried shoppers, is unfortunately unknown as of yet.

Bewildered police seized the opportunity for a photo with Wigan's local extra-terrestial being, adding a shooting star to their picture before posting it on Facebook.

Officers said: "Social distancing continues in Platt Bridge.

"Our staff are out on foot to promote the government's guidelines.

"We came across a member of the public dressed in an alien costume of to do an essential food shop and couldn't resist adding the picture to our message. #ETstayathome "
