Members of the public who tried to rescue a 65-year-old woman from a fire have been praised by police. South Wales Police confirmed the woman died after a fire in a bungalow in Pentyrch, on the outskirts of Cardiff.
The alarm was raised just after midday on Friday (August 19), after the blaze broke out at an address in Cefn Bychan. It has been reported that workmen who were in the area and police officers tried unsuccessfully to rescue the victim from the flames.

Detective Inspector Bob Chambers, from South Wales Police, said: “We wish to acknowledge the bravery of the members of the public who tried their best to gain access to the bungalow and extinguish the fire while emergency services were on their way.”
South Wales Fire and Rescue said: "We wish to express our condolences to the family, and remind our communities about the importance of having working smoke alarms and an escape plan".
The exact cause of the fire is now subject to a joint investigation by South Wales Police and the South Wales Fire and Rescue Service. A statement from South Wales Police said the woman's next of kin had been informed.
