Person dies after being hit by train

A person has died after being hit by a train on a line on Tuesday morning (March 15). Emergency services were called to a railway line shortly after 9am between Swindon and Gloucester.

Officers and paramedics rushed to the location but the person was pronounced dead at the scene. The death is not currently being treated as suspicious.

Services between Gloucester and Swindon have been cancelled or revised with trains running between London Paddington and Cheltenham Spa also being affected. A spokesman for British Transport Police (BTP) said officers are carrying out investigations on behalf of the coroner. He said: "Officers were called to the line near Swindon at 9.07am this morning (March 15) following reports of a casualty on the tracks.

"Paramedics also attended, however sadly a person was pronounced dead at the scene. This incident is not being treated as suspicious and a file will be prepared for the coroner."

In a post on Twitter, Great Western Rail shared an update that said: "Due to a person being hit by a train between Swindon and Gloucester all lines are blocked. Train services running through these stations may be cancelled, delayed or revised. Disruption is expected until 10:15."

Train services have been delayed to allow emergency services to deal with the incident. Passengers impacted on the route have been able to use their tickets on other routes such as CrossCountry services and Stagecoach buses.
