Person arrested amid 'disturbance in the stands at Old Trafford' during Manchester United v Brighton game

A person has been arrested after an incident in the stands during Manchester United's game with Brighton on Sunday.

Trouble flared in the South Stand at Old Trafford, now known as the Sir Bobby Charlton stand, during United's 2-1 defeat to the south coast side in their opening Premier League game of the season, their first competitive game under new boss Erik Ten Hag.

It is unclear what sparked the disturbance. However, pictures and video posted on social media appeared to show a scuffle with a number of people seemingly trying to diffuse the situation.

Greater Manchester Police (GMP) have now confirmed they are investigating the incident and that one person, a man in his 40s, has been arrested.

"An arrest was made at Man Utd during the match v Brighton for affray, after an issue in the Sir Bobby Charlton Stand (which has been circulated on social media)" GMP's Stretford division said on its Twitter feed.

"Enquires ongoing. Football is a passionate game but this behaviour isn't acceptable."
