A major residential housing development in Antrim town will see the construction of 525 new homes in one of the biggest developments in the area in recent years.
Permission was granted this week by Antrim and Newtownabbey Borough Council for the £100 million development of the 26 hectare site which sits close to Niblock Road in the town. As well as a mixture of detached, semi-detached, townhouses and apartments, the project will also include six shops, public spaces and a play park, the council said, adding that the shops will create up to 100 jobs.
“This huge expansion will transform Antrim for the better, acting as a catalyst for continued economic growth in the town,” Chair of the Planning Committee Alderman Fraser Agnew said. “It is further proof of the confidence investors have in our borough and will be welcome news for local businesses and suppliers.”
Mayor of Antrim and Newtownabbey Alderman Stephen Ross said the additional supply of housing will welcome news for prospective buyers.
“This major development will help with the growing demand for housing in the area, particularly from first-time buyers,” he said. “The development will be served by six new local shops, creating between 80-100 new retail jobs. It will also provide a major boost to the local construction industry, with the applicant indicating the scheme will create 70 jobs during the construction phase.”
