A housing plan for an empty office building has been praised as 'perfect' by local residents.
The proposal would see the partial demolition and extension of the former Garners building in Hall Street, Sherwood, to form 13 flats for Nottingham City Council’s Assisted Living programme.
Local residents were optimistic that the flats, which developers have said will "provide self-contained one-bedroomed apartments for a vulnerable section of the community", would be well placed if approved.
Paul Sales, 63, who is retired and lives in Sherwood, said that the plans were "perfect".
"It is perfect because you're right next to the high street, with all your shops, and you've got the buses nearby, too," he said.
"Everything is Sherwood is pretty much on Mansfield Road and you'd be right next to it - in walking distance for those that need assistance.
"It would be a good use of the building, as we need more of this type of housing and people wouldn't have to travel far. It's a nice little area as well."
Richard Lilley, 57, a postman who lives nearby in Sherwood, said: "It's a good idea, I'm happy that something like that might replace it.
"I think we always need more of any sort of housing, and assisted living is important when we have an ageing population - the current ones are pricey.
"It's a great place for it, it has a load of parking space and is a good enough size to fit the flats in.
"With the shops and buses, they can also keep a sense of independence in their own flats."
There would also be a staff area split across the ground and first floor which would provide a communal and a secure staff office.
A Sherwood resident, who wished to remain anonymous, said: "I have always just wandered past and not really thought about what was there.
"I think it's a good plan, I don't see why not or who would be against it.
"It's a well placed spot really you've got the buses into and out of the city and the shops too."
A planning document, submitted by Hockley Developments Ltd, said: "The application proposals, being for assisted living, provide self-contained one-bedroomed apartments for a vulnerable section of the community which are a priority for the city council.
"The application site is close to a significant shopping centre which will provide for the needs of the residents and close to the public transport services along Mansfield Road."
The application is currently pending consideration by Nottingham City Council.
