Pep Guardiola statue claim made as Man City ace Kevin De Bruyne told why he could follow

Former Manchester City defender Nedum Onuoha believes Pep Guardiola is likely to have his statue built outside of the Etihad Stadium before Kevin De Bruyne.

The club currently have three statues outside of the ground, with Vincent Kompany, David Silva and Sergio Aguero all honoured. Many have mooted that De Bruyne and Guardiola will get their own at some point.

Both figures will go down as City legends at the end of their respective stays and will be known as two of the greats that graced the English game. Their names will be etched into an exclusive page in the history books should they achieve the Treble this season.

Guardiola won the Champions League twice at Barcelona, albeit his last triumph came 12 years ago. De Bruyne has not yet touched European silverware.

But even if they falter against Inter Milan in Istanbul, the pair will be talked about for years to come. Onuoha was asked if and when he thinks statues of Guardiola and De Bruyne will be built, with Ilkay Gundogan also suggested to him.

“I think, if anything, the next statue that goes up will be a Guardiola one,” he told the Let Me Talk podcast. “I think it will be before players. The Gundogan and De Bruyne statues… it feels like De Bruyne will probably get one at some point.

“Cases have been put forward to say he is the best midfielder in the world. That’s a very, very significant layer to have on board. I don’t think he’d want one. But that’s quite a significant thing.”
