Pep Guardiola offered support to Gabriel Jesus after the Arsenal forward’s injury.

The Brazilian, who left Manchester City after a glittering five-and-a-half-year spell at the club, underwent knee surgery earlier this month on a knee problem picked up during the World Cup.

There are fears Jesus could miss up to three months of action in a big blow to Mikel Arteta’s Premier League title push.

The Gunners lead City by five points and are due to meet the defending champions on February 15 after their initial meeting was postponed in September.

Jesus has been crucial to Arsenal’s rapid-fire improvement this season, scoring five goals in 14 League appearances and setting the tone from the front. Potentially missing one of their key players for a significant portion of the campaign, the club will be active in the upcoming January transfer window.

Speaking ahead of City’s Carabao Cup clash with Liverpool on Thursday, Guardiola said: “I am so sorry for Gabriel.

“I would prefer that he could play immediately with Arsenal. He’s an important player for them, like he was for us.

“I want him to have an incredible and speedy recovery – I am so sorry for him because I know there isn’t one person at this club who could speak badly about him. But he will be back.”
